This project aims at studying several atomic processes and fundamental parameters that influence line shapes and relative intensities in transition metals and rare earths. This problem is tackled from the experimental point of view through the assembly of a state-of-the-art Double Crystal Spectrometer (DCS) that is able to perform line energy measurements with no external standards, directly tied to the definition of the meter. From the theoretical point of view, the team will use a multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock approach, to calculate X-ray fundamental parameters such as line energies and shapes, and fluorescence yields, among others. These theoretical results, coupled to Monte-Carlo ray tracing simulations of the DCS will allow the investigation of complex phenomena such as chemical shifts and collective conduction band excitations, when compared to experimental spectra of pure elements and a set of its oxides. This will strengthen Portugal's position in both SPARC/FAIR and EXHA. This project (PTDC/FIS-AQM/31969/2017) was financed by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in the amount of 229.733,33€ to the Laboratory of Instrumentation, Biomedical Engineering and Radiation Physics (LIBPhys-UNL), Department of Physics at the NOVA School of Science and Technology.
